The basics of spindle-turning

wood tips

Spindle turning is not difficult at first. However, it requires several basic concepts. Nick Cook, a Professional, shares some key principles to get the best spindle turning results. First, never cut uphill on the spindle. This will result in many catches and catastrophic results. Also, ensure that your tool rest is the same height as your tools. Thin tools will require a greater tool rest than those with thicker blades. Cut above the center and you should avoid any catches.

Tools

There are many tools you can use to help with spindle turns. A spindle chisel and a spindle cutter are necessary for this task. Either of these tools is capable of turning spindles. Each tool has a unique design for different types of profiles, so you should buy a spindle gouge that suits your needs. A skewchisel can be used to make a beaded pommel more precise.

Materials

To produce a spinning tool, a number of tools are used. Spindle turning machines can turn nearly any type of workpiece. The diameter or hole diameter of the spindle indicates how large a piece of workpiece must be to pass through it. A minilathe has a spindle hole that is 3/4 inches in diameter, but can be safely reamed to 13/16". The tooling can be used by tiling the front of this hole.

Rosewood

Rosewood spindles can be used for woodturning projects if you are interested in this type of work. This exotic hardwood comes in many striking colors and has natural luster. The wood turns easily on the lathe. The three-inch square blanks can be used for quick spindle turning projects. If you're looking for a challenge, try working with an exotic wood such as Patagonian Rosewood.

Hickory

Hickory is a good choice for making spindles from. Although this wood is difficult to work with by hand, once you have mastered it you will love the rustic beauty and strength of your creations. Many woodworkers like hickory because of its strength and resilience, but also for its open grain pattern and color variation.

Hardwoods

When selecting woods for spindle turns, think about what kind of turning you would like to do. There are many hardwoods you can use. While you can buy spindle blanks that are already turned, you will have to choose the right ones. Consider hardwoods that can be re-used, like maple, ash and cherry. You will be able to continue turning them as often as you like. While hardwoods are not the best for spindle-turning, they can provide a strong base for the final product.

Woodturning machines

The size of the spindle turning machine should be your first consideration when looking for one. The machine must be large enough to handle woodturning tools. You'll also need to be concerned about the tool's edge. The less likely it is to grab the wood, the smaller the edge of the tool. Because of this, cutting downhill is more difficult and can cause your tool to grab the wood and pull it off the table.

FAQ

Can I refinish furniture that I make?

Yes! There are plenty of ways to refinish old pieces of furniture without having to pay a pro. Here are some examples:

To remove stains and scratches, use sandpaper. Next, wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth.

Use clear polyurethane varnish. Allow to dry thoroughly before moving furniture.

Acrylic paint is a great way to paint furniture.

Instead of using paint, stain is a better choice. The furniture will get a rich look with the stain.

Use shellac wax. The wax will add shine to the wood and protect it.

How much should a skilled woodworker earn per hour?

The hourly rate for a professional Woodworker will vary depending on many variables, such as experience, skill level and availability.

An average hourly rate for skilled woodworkers ranges between $20-$50.

An hourly rate of $10 for a less skilled woodworker could be possible.

Do you have any other information I should know about woodworking and/or the process of making it?

Furniture making is a laborious task. It's easy not to appreciate how hard it is. Finding the right wood is the hardest part. There are so many varieties of wood available that choosing one can be difficult.

Another problem is that not all wood has uniform properties. Some woods will crack or warp with time. Others will split or crack. These things should be considered before you buy wood.

Are you able to teach yourself woodworking

Learning by doing is the best way of learning anything. Woodworking takes practice, skill, patience and experience. Mastering any craft takes time.

It is the best way to learn to do something is to actually do it. Start small and learn from your mistakes.

Statistics

  • Woodworkers on the lower end of that spectrum, the bottom 10% to be exact, make roughly $24,000 a year, while the top 10% makes $108,000. (zippia.com)
  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)
  • Most woodworkers agree that lumber moisture needs to be under 10% for building furniture. (woodandshop.com)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)

How To

How to make wooden joints

This tutorial will show how to join 2 pieces of wood together. We will use the pocket hole joint, which is drilling holes in the wood to join them. If your wood is straight and flat, this method will work well. You might consider dowel joinery if your wood isn’t straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Start by measuring and marking the spot where the pocket hole joint will be placed. With a handheld drill machine or jig saw, drill 3/4-inch deep holes in the ends of each piece.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue Together Apply glue to both sides of the wood. Let the wood sit for 5 minutes, then clamp it together.
  4. Clamp the Pieces Together. After the glue has dried completely, you can clamp the pieces together until they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim the excess wood around the joint after the glue has dried completely.

To be able to turn the pieces inside-out, leave enough room between them.
