How to drive a nail through wood

To drive a nail into wood, the first step is to select the right size and type hammer. There are many types of hammers that you will find: claw hammers and sledgehammers; mallets; ball peen hammers; and hatchets. Each type has its strengths and weaknesses. For example, a claw hammer works best when you want to hit something hard, like nails; however, it's difficult to control precisely where the blow lands. The sledgehammer works well for large areas, but is too heavy for smaller tasks.

Place your hand flat on the side of your chosen hammer so that the handle rests in your palm. Hold the handle in your hand, but don’t force it too hard that you break. You should hold the hammer straight-up, with your wrist still relaxed. Then swing the hammer back toward the ground, aiming for the center of the nail. You should feel the impact on the nail from the hammer. Try practicing with a block to help you master the art of swinging a stick.

You can now drive the nail by holding the hammer to your body. Place the nail so that it is perpendicular with the wood's surface. Your eyes should be focused on the nail's tip. Swing the hammer forward, and then move the hammerhead. Repeat this action several times, gradually increasing the speed of the swing. When you are confident with the technique, add power to your swings. Then, raise the hammer from your shoulder to bring it down. This will help you put more energy behind each of your moves.

Once you've made the first nail hole, take out the hammer. To remove the remainder of the nails, you can use a screwdriver/pry bar. Keep the nail heads parallel to the board's surfaces in order to avoid splitting wood.
