How To

Tips for driving a nail in wood

When driving a nail into wood, it is important to first choose the correct size and kind of hammer. There are many types of hammers that you will find: claw hammers and sledgehammers; mallets; ball peen hammers; and hatchets. Each type of hammer has its pros and cons. For example, a claw hammer works best when you want to hit something hard, like nails; however, it's difficult to control precisely where the blow lands. Although a sledgehammer can be used to hit large areas quickly, it is too heavy to be useful for small tasks.

After choosing the right hammer, place your hand flat against the side of the head so that the handle rests comfortably in your palm. You can grip the handle with your fingers, but not so tight that it causes injury. Keep your wrist relaxed and the hammer straight up. Then swing the hammer back toward the ground, aiming for the center of the nail. You should feel the impact on the nail from the hammer. Try practicing with a block to help you master the art of swinging a stick.

When you're ready to start driving the nail, hold the hammer in front of you close to your body. You will need to position the nail so it is parallel to the wood. Your eyes should be focused on the nail's tip. Then, swing the hammer forward. Next, follow the motion of your hammerhead. Repeat this action several times, gradually increasing the speed of the swing. Once you've mastered the technique, try adding power to your swings. You can hold the hammer over your shoulder and forcefully bring it down. You will be able to use more energy and put your best foot forward.

Once you have successfully drilled the first hole in the nail, remove the hammer. Use a pry bar or screwdriver to pull out the rest of the nails. To prevent splitting the wood, ensure you keep the nail heads flush against the board's surface.
